-ANI): The Acting Director of Provincial Women's Affairs Najia Siddiqi was killed in a drive- by shooting in eastern Afghan province of Laghman Monday morning, a spokesman for the provincial government said.

"Siddiqi was on her way to the office when two gunmen riding a motorbike opened fire on her vehicle in Sharmaki area in provincial capital Mehtarlam city at about 8:30 a.m. local time," spokesman Sarhadi Zhawak told Xinhua.

Siddiqi died of her wounds on the way to the hospital, he said, adding that the attackers made their good escape shortly after the shooting.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident in the province some 90 km east of Afghan capital Kabul, the official added.

He added that Siddiqi was appointed to the post after the former director of the women department Hanifah Safai was killed in a bombing earlier this year.

Safai was killed along with her husband and daughter after a sticky bomb attached to her car went off in Mehtarlam in July.

Earlier Monday, provincial police chief of southwestern province of Nimroz was killed in a bombing.

No group claimed responsibility for Monday's attacks although Taliban suspects routinely claim responsibility for such incidents.

The armed outfit, which launched an annual rebel offensive on May 3 this year, has said anyone working for the government and the NATO-led troops are legitimate target of the militants.

Currently, there are about 100,000 NATO-led forces, with 68,000 of them Americans, stationed in Afghanistan. (Xinhua-ANI)
