Srikakulam: Anti-nuclear activists have urged government to reconsider its decision to set up a nuclear power plant in Andhra Pradesh, saying the proposed project would pose a danger to the life of people.

The government is setting six light weight nuclear reactors, each of 1,000 MW capacity in the district.

Activists comprising former union energy secretary E.A S. Sharma among others deplored the government's move while addressing a public meeting at Ranasthalam yesterday.

"Countries that depend upon nuclear power are shifting to new modes post Fukushima disaster. Countries like Germany are shifting to solar energy as the form of power generation. We appeal to government for a thorough review of the proposed plant as the project would put to risk thousands of lives," Sharma told reporters.

According to government, in all 1,983 households with a population of 7,960 from Ramachandrapura, Gudem, Kotapalem, Tekkali and Jeeru Kovvada villages would be displaced from the project area and rehabilitated at a distant location.
