Afghan opium production up by 61 percent

Kabul, Oct 11 (IANS) Opium production in Afghanistan has increased by 61 percent in 2011 in comparison with 2010, a UN report released here said Tuesday.

In 2011, according to the report, Afghanistan produced 5,800 tonnes of opium, reported Xinhua.

Afghanistan has been the greatest illicit opium producer in the entire world, ahead of Myanmar and the 'Golden Triangle' since 1992. In addition to opiates, Afghanistan is also the largest producer of hashish in the world.
