The Shiromani Akali Dal on Thursday expelled Ranjit Singh Rana, the man accused of shooting at and killing a police official.
Punjab police arrested Rana, SAD local unit president for allegedly killing of assistant sub inspector Ravinderpal Singh on Wednesday.
"No one from our party is with the culprit. Everybody has condemned this. It is a serious incident, and he (Rana) will have to face the law," said SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema.
The incident took place in Amritsar city where Singh's daughter, who was being harassed by Rana and his men, called her father to her aid. When Singh arrived on the spot, he was shot in the leg. The miscreants fled the scene, but returned and shot the ASI a second time.
The girl was also reportedly injured in the incident, which took place near the city's Chhehrata police station.
The incident has triggered a widespread furore, with the victim's family calling for justice, and the political class and common people voicing their condemnation.
The Congress party denounced the killing and lashed at SAD for the deteriorating law and order situation in Punjab. (ANI)
