New Delhi, July 23 (IANS) Delhi Lieutenant Governor (LG) Tejinder Khanna Monday appealed to people to exercise restraint and respect the Delhi High court order on the purported excavated mosque site near Jama Masjid.

Ten policemen were Saturday injured in stone pelting by a mob after being denied entry on its premises.

"The lieutenant governor has urged all the representatives present in the meeting to exercise restraint and instruct their constituents to fully respect the orders of the high court," said an official.

In the wake of tension mounting at the site, Khanna had called a meeting which was attended by Delhi government minister Haroon Yusuf, Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Delhi Police officials and others.

"He also directed police and North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC) to ensure that assembly of any congregation does not takes place at the disputed site," the official in LG house said.

"A meeting should be called at the highest level with the stake holders to consider the matter urgently so that no public unrest and security concerns are followed," said a statement from LG office.

Two people were arrested Sunday over pelting of stones the night before on policemen posted there.

People in Subhas Nagar area had started the construction of a mosque at the site after a building's remains were discovered early this month at the site excavated for Delhi Metro work.

Some people from the area claimed that the ruins were those of the 17th century Mughal-era Akbarabadi mosque and started building a fresh structure at the site but the Delhi High Court put a stop to it Friday.

Following the court order, the North Delhi Municipal Corporation and police cordoned off the area and handed over the site to ASI.
