Lucknow: A minister in the Uttar Pradesh government allegedly tried to abduct the Chief Medical Officer of Gonda district in an attempt to to force him into including the names of contractual doctors under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) scheme.

Gonda CMO S P Singh said that when he told Revenue and Rehabilitation Minister Vinod Kumar Singh, a member of Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's cabinet, that the NRHM appointment process was computerised, he tried to kidnap him and his clerks as well.

While the bid failed as the CMO supposedly managed to flee and contacted the authorities for help, the minister, known locally as Pandit Singh, has said that no such kidnapping took place.

A massive corruption scam in NRHM had rocked the previous Mayawati government in the state and three CMOs linked to the scam have lost their lives.
