A court in the Kamrup district in Assam sent Amar Jyoti Kalita, prime accused in the Guwahati molestation case to five days police custody on Thursday, officials said.
The court of Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate sentenced Kalita after he was produced before court by Guwahati city police.
Amar Jyoti Kalita was arrested by police in Varanasi on July 23 and brought to Guwahati on July 25.
He will be produced before court on July 30.
Kalita was seen in a cap and red T-shirt in a video clip of the incident recorded by a journalist and he was also traced on the social networking site of Facebook.
After a nationwide outcry erupted following the media frenzy over the incident in which a 17-year-old woman was molested by a large mob for over half an hour earlier this month, Kalita had first fled to Bhubaneswar, Odisha
From there he went to Mumbai and then returned back to Bhubaneswar.
He then called several lawyers seeking anticipatory bail. Subsequently he again travelled to Mumbai and made several calls to lawyers from the CST station in Mumbai.
In Mumbai, he was captured by the security cameras at the station. Kalita then left Mumbai for Kolkata after his cousin there refused to lodge him.
At Speed Post office in Howrah he was captured yet again in CCTV footage. He then went to Varanasi.
According to media reports, from Varanasi, Kalita contacted the Assam police, and asked for security and with their co-ordination Kalita surrendered to the UP police.
Meanwhile, Guwahati city police arrested another accused person on Thursday.
"We had arrested Rubul Ali, one of the accused person of the case from Baihata Chariali, some 30 kms from Guwahati," Guwahati SP (operation branch) Ranjan Bhuyan said.
Police arrested 15 accused persons of the molestation case so far, while two are still absconding
