Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani will pay for the 'Z' category security he will be provided with after he received a threat letter from the Indian Mujahideen, which was hand-delivered at his office in Mumbai, said reports.
However, the move has landed the government in a pool of controversy.
"Security is given only after threat perception assessment," said Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari.
The high level security was granted to Ambani as Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde felt that Ambani is a national asset.
Voicing out the opinions of many, writer-columnist Chetan Bhagat tweeted:"Billionaires get A to Z-class security.Little girls learning A to Z, however, continue to get kicked out of police stations. What priorities."
The ´Z´ category security means Ambani will have pilot and escort vehicles with commandos armed with sophisticated weapons. Around two dozen personnel may be required to guard the business tycoon on a rotational basis.
The Home Ministry has shouldered the responsibility on anti-Naxal operations force CRPF, after the proposal to this effect was cleared, reports said.
The proposal came to effect after the letter allegedly threatened a terror attack at Ambani´s Antilia residence at Altamount Road in south Mumbai.
The Home Ministry decided to provide ´Z´ class security to Ambani following an inquiry by the Mumbai Police into the alleged letter.
Media reports citing sources said a threat analysis was also carried out by the Intelligence Bureau, which recommended round-the-clock security cover for the industrialist.
The request received its approval a fortnight ago.
The Mumbai police is also planning to fortify Mukesh Ambani´s residential building ´Antilia´ in south Mumbai´s Altamount Road.
