When Chidambaram turned reporter

The BJP's drubbing in the Karnataka Assembly polls turned Finance Minister P Chidambaram into a TV reporter.

As senior BJP leader Jaswant Singh emerged from Parliament, Chidambaram, who was being questioned on the elections by journalists, took the mike from a TV reporter and asked Singh, "Don't you credit the Congress with victory?"

Singh, who was Chidambaram's predecessor in the finance ministry, agreed that "if you stop governance, people will vote you out".

"He is a gentleman," Chidambaram said of Singh as he restored the mike to the reporter.

Final tally in, Congress wins 121 seats

The final tally of the Karnataka Assembly polls has finally come in. Congress wins by a big margin while the BJP and JDS are tied for second place with 40 seats each. BS Yeddyurappa‘s KJP has only managed 6 seats and it's safe to say that he is not going to be a kingmaker like he hoped he would be.

JD(S) chief Deve Gowda said that he is not disappointed with the performance of his party which many believe have exceeded expectations. People have asked us to sit in the opposition, he said, adding that there is no point debating corruption in Parliament. He added that the people have given Congress a chance to prove itself and that the party has an opportunity to give good clean governance.

The Samajwadi Party (SP) opened its account in Karnataka with its candidate C.P. Yogeshwara winning from Channapatna, about 60 km from Bangalore.

Union Labour Minister and senior leader from Karnataka Mallikarjun Kharge today indicated that he was ready to be considered for the Chief Minister's post following the electoral victory in the state.

"I don't want the post because of my caste (dalit). I am not interested because of long-standing service to the party. If they think that I am fit for the post, then it is upto them to take a decision. I will abide by any decision the high command takes," he said answering questions whether he is in the race for Chief Minister's post.

Kharge, however, added that he was a senior in the party, but whatever decision the Congress President and the leadership takes will be acceptable to him.

When pressed further whether he would be okay with Siddaramaiah, who was earlier with JD(S), he said, "In Congress party everyone was capable and whosoever the high command decides we will support."

Modi's magic seems to have failed in Mangalore, which was seen as a BJP bastion. Pramod Madhawraj of the Congress has won the Udupi seat. U T Khader of Ullal and Vasanth Bangera of Belthangady have both won their seats. All these three candidates are from Mangalore. The Congress is leading in Buntwal and also Mangalore central.

Congress leader Dr.Parameshwar, who is also a candidate for the CM's berth, has told NDTV that he hopes for a clear mandate for his party. The leader seems very confident of his party's chances of claiming power in the state.
