Andhra Pradesh: Heavy rains kill 25

At least 25 people were killed in Andhra Pradesh as heavy rain triggered by last week's Cyclone Nilam continued to disrupt life in the Indian state, media reports said on Monday.

Coastal Andhra Pradesh has received heavy rain in the past 48 hours and the met department expects more rainfall in the next 24 hours.

At least 150 villages in several districts in the state, including Krishna, Srikakulam, Guntur, have been submerged, reports said.

Floods have forced thousands of people to leave their homes and take refuge in government shelters.



Narsapuram town of West Godavari district of the state has received 31 cm of rainfall, officials said.

Vishakapatnam, Prakasam, Vizianagaram and East Godavari have received around 25 cm of rainfall since Saturday.

Andhra Pradesh chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy has put all government departments in the state on high alert.

According to reports, Reddy is likely to tour the affected districts on Monday.

"We forecast more rains in the next 48 hours and if the forecast is true, more losses and casualties can be expected," T Radha, commissioner, disaster management, told a television news channel.

Schools in the affected districts remained shut.

Train and bus services have been disrupted in the state.
