Scuffles broke out between the police and protesters outside Raj Bhavan here on Monday, as scores of social activists, mostly women gathered to raise their concerns over sexual crimes against women following the December 16 gang rape death of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi.
Police detained some protesters who tried to enter Raj Bhavan.
Recalling the ghastly incident of December 16, protesters raised slogans and demanded stern action against sexual offenders.
"This is against molestation, rape and such crimes (that) are happening frequently in Delhi and Kolkata also. We are protesting against this menace," said Kalpana Dutta, a protester.
The brutal gang rape of the 23-year-old paramedical student has provoked nationwide protests and rare debates about violence against women in India.
The victim died from her injuries on December 29 in a Singapore hospital, prompting promises of action from the government that is struggling to respond to the public outrage. (ANI)
