Ashura, commemorating the martyrdom of Prophet Mohammed's grandson Imam Hussein, will be observed in the national capital on December 17.
This was announced today by Maulana Mufti Mohammed Mukkaram, Shahi Imam of the Fatehpuri mosque here, after the new moon was sighted.
"The new moon of Muharram was sighted today. Muharram is the first month of Islamic calender and the new year will start from tomorrow," Mukarram said in a statement.
Ashura refers to the tenth day of Muharram and Shias take out processions and flagellate themselves to mourn the death of Imam Hussein on that day.
