Two cadres of Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) were killed in a gunfight with security forces in Assam's Goalpara district along the Meghalaya border on Thursday morning, officials said.
The encounter took place at Amrengkana area under Boko police station in the district along the Meghalaya border early on Thursday.
Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of army and police had launched a search operation in the area where a militant group was hiding.
"When the security personnel reached the dense forest area, the Garo militants started firing on the troops and forced us to exchange bullets," a top police official said.
Two militants were killed on spot and two others managed to flee from the encounter spot and entered the neighbouring state.
Security forces recovered two 7.65 pistols and ammunition from the slain militants.
Top police and army officials rushed to the area and launched a search operation there.
In separate incident, security forces recovered huge cache of arms and ammunition from Assam´s Dima Hasao district on Thursday.
Security forces recovered four AK-47 rifles with magazines from the Mibong area in the hill district.
