Thousands of people and supporters of Bodoland People's Front (BPF) blocked railway tracks at Kokrajhar and Gossaigaon in Assam protest against the arrest of party MLA Pradeep Brahma, officials said.

Along with the people, at least three MLAs of BPF, alliance party of the Congress-led state government, blocked the railway tracks demanding Brahma´s release.

Security forces have been deployed at various areas in Kokrajhar district for preventing fresh violence.

Brahma was arrested by police from his residence at Boragari area near Dotama in Kokrajhar district late Wednesday night.

"Brahma was arrested after seven cases were registered against him at Dotama and Fakiragram police station for allegedly being involved in BTAD (Bodoland Territorial Autonomous Districts) riots," a top police official said.

Meanwhile, indefinite curfew has been imposed in Kokrajhar district.

At least 78 people were killed in the Assam violence between Bodos and Muslim settlers since July and countless were rendered homeless and sheltered in relief camps.
