Assam: Curfew relaxed, Army patrols

The curfew in Assam was relaxed on was relaxed in Assam's Kokrajhar district on Monday that remained largely peaceful after a revival in ethnic violence that has claimed ten lives in ten days.

Five columns of the Army have been deployed and are conducting flag marches in the communally disturbed areas of Kokrajhar district in Lower Assam, the army said.

The marches have been going on since Last Thursday when the soldiers were deployed at required location within three hours of receiving a requisition form the civil administration, the army added.



"No major violent incident has been reported in this area since 17 November 2012 and District Administration had relaxed curfew on 18 November 2012," it said in a statement.

"The Army is also maintaining adequate number of columns on stand by to deal with any emergent situation," it added.

In July this year, Kokrajhar was the epicentre of a the worst outbreak of ethnic violence in over a decade in the state of Assam as hostilities between the indigenous Bodo tribals and Bengali-speaking Muslim settlers sparked tensions.
