Assam group seeks Citizenship act amendment

Guwahati, Sept 5 (IBNS) : A civil society group of Assam Assam Public Works (APW) on Wednesday sought amendment of the Citizenship act 1955 for the National Register of Citizens (NRC) update in the state.

During a press conference held in Guwahati, the chairman of APW Abhijit Sarma said that, the act should be amended so that a person born in India before July 1, 1987 is eligible for citizenship, even if there is no known status of parents.

"We demand to the Union government and the state government to take initiative and amendment the act," APW Secretary Bitu Talukdar said.

Meanwhile, the Assam Chief Minister had announced that, the NRC update will be ended in the state in next three years.

In first phase of the NRC update it will be covered 42 assembly constituency.

Meanwhile, a a right to information (RTI) report revealed that, the Union Home ministry would not have any information from the Assam state government for NRC update.

Several organizations including All Assam Students Union (AASU), Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chatra Parishad (AJYCP), Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) demanded to the state government to take initiative of NRC update soon.
