With the aim of creating employment opportunities in Assam, the Institution for Culture and Rural Development (I-CARD) at Bhagchung in Jorhat district is training uneducated youth, mainly school drop outs.

The institute works with Rights Foundation under the National Council for Vocational Training and provides free vocational skills training to the 20 such unemployed youth of the region.

"We are trying to help poor people. We have just started small vocational training centre and here we have computer course," Surjit, Assistant Director, I-CARD .

" We are planning to have more computers courses for drop out students and for poor people also we will try to have more computers, more rooms, by next year so that they will benefit a lot and they will come up in life that is our aim," he added.

As of now there are five courses including information technology, hospitality management, tourism, plumbing and construction and shuttering. Other courses like beautician, tailoring and embroidery will be added soon.

In the three months long course, the students are also trained in personality development and communicative English.

"It is a very good initiative because I cannot afford to take admission in a computer course. Here I am getting free training and I am learning so many other things. It will benefit me a lot," said Janavi Doley, a trainee from Golaghat

"It's not only computers, they teach us spoken English, and personality development also. I have learnt so many new things that I did not know before, so it very helpful for me." Added Prandeep Pegu, another trainee from Lakhimpur.

Assam has suffered from prolonged insurgency due to which basic facilities like education and healthcare have not reached the people in far-flung areas. Now, with the decline of insurgency, the state is reaping the peace dividend and government-run schemes are reaching the people. (ANI)
