At least three people were killed and 50 injured after nine coaches of a passenger train derailed at an unmanned crossing in Kamrup district of Assam on Friday morning, media reports said.
The Bongaigaon-Guwahati Chilarai Passenger train was derailed after it rammed into a road construction vehicle stuck on the track at Gossainghati between Azara and Mirza railway stations,about 15 km from Guwahati, at around 9:45 am.
Injured passengers have been rushed to Mirza Public Health Centre, while those in critical condition have been referred to Gauhati Medical College Hospital, police sources were quoted as saying.
Unconfirmed reports said that the driver of the JCB vehicle and his assistant are among those dead.
Relief work is in full swing at the accident site and rescue teams from the North-East Frontier Railway, the district administration and the National Disaster Response Force have been rushed to the spot.
