Melbourne: A 20-year-old Indian student, Manrajwinder Singh, who suffered serious head injuries after being brutally attacked and robbed in Australia, is now out of induced coma and responding well to treatment.

Manrajwinder was beaten up by gang of eight people perceived to be 'African' in appearance on December 29.

"Doctors have been really working hard to save my brother and he is now out of induced coma. There is a long road of recovery for him but the silver lining is that he is responding well," Yadwinder Singh, the victim's brother, said, adding that Manrajwinder's medical condition is still critical.

Manrajwinder, in Australia to study accounts, was bashed up at Birrarung Marr near Princess Bridge here, when he and two other friends were waiting for a train. He was admitted to the Alfred Hospital with serious head injuries.

According to a police statement earlier, Manrajwinder was sitting near the footpath when the gang robbed and assaulted him. Police have arrested three teenagers involved the case.
