Voting began in Tripura on Thursday amidst tight security.
The northeastern state is electing representatives to its 60-member Assembly.
The contest is between the Congress and the Left Front, which has been in power in the state for 20 years now.
The Left, led by chief minister Manik Sarkar, will be eager to retain Tripura after the Front´s ouster from strongholds Kerala and West Bengal.
The BJP, which has never won a seat in Tripura, has fielded 20 candidates this time.
A total of 249 candidates are in the fray, said reports.
