ASSU demands NRC update before polls

Guwahati, Oct 29 (IBNS) : Agitating against the illegal immigration, All Assam Students Union (AASU) on Monday demanded the work of updating the National Register of Citizens (NRC) should be completed before the next Lok Sabha polls in 2014.

At a press conference held in Guwahati, the students organization said that, the "White Paper" on influx issue, which was published by the state government on Oct 20 was not updated.

"The White Paper is a white lie and the Congress led Assam state government is trying to make fool of the people of Assam," AASU advisor Dr Samujjal Kumar Bhattacharyee said.

"Lot of facts and figures are not mentioned in the White Paper," he said.

Releasing a book on the delay of implementation of Assam Accord-1985, the AASU leader said that, influx issue had been mentioned in various judgments of the Supreme Court and Gauhati High Court.

"The Union government had also mentioned the illegal immigration issue in the state. But the state government has avoide this issue," Dr Bhattacharyee said.

The students organization had challanged to the Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's comment that "illegal immigration is not the big problem in Assam".
