Melbourne, Jan 23 (IBNS) In a major upset for Tennis star Serena Williams in the year's first grand slam, the five-time champion was crushed by Russia's Ekaterina Makarova in the fourth round of the Australian Open here on Monday.
The Russian lefty, who had already upset more favoured opponents Kaia Kanepi and Vera Zvonareva, stunned an error-prone Williams 6-2 6-3.
She now awaits the winner of the match between fourth seed Maria Sharapova and 14th seed Sabine Lisicki for a place in the semifinals.
Williams, the former world number one, has won the Australia open five times. Her last title victory here came in the year 2010.
