New Delhi: Visiting Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard met External Affairs Minister S.M Krishna here today and discussed various bilateral issues related to trade and nuclear cooperation.
Gillard's visit to India is being viewed as the stepping-stone for sale of uranium to India with Australia initiating the process of discussions on the civil-nuclear agreement.
Earlier on Tuesday, Gillard had said that Australian government has modified their policy to pave way for providing uranium to India.
Australia had earlier refused to sell nuclear material to India because New Delhi had not signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
However, Gillard had been pushing to overturn the ban, removing a diplomatic thorn between the two countries and potentially opening up a new and growing market for Australian suppliers.
Gillard is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh later today and will discuss the steps that need to be taken to strengthen bilateral economic ties.
