Bhubaneswar: Unable to meet her Maoist son Dunna Keshava Rao alias Azad in the jail, D Kamulamma on Monday staged a dharna in front of the prison here demanding the surrendered ultra's early release.

"The Odisha government has not allowed me to meet my son Azad who is in the jail here for 10 months. I have come from Andhra Pradesh to meet him," Kamulamma told reporters while staging a dharna in front of the jail here.

Azad had surrendered in Hyderabad on May 18 last year before the DGP, Andhra Pradesh, and was released six days later. He was taken into custody by Odisha Police on May 28 for his alleged involvement in the killing of VHP leader Laxamananda Saraswati and four of his followers in Kandhamal district of Odisha in August 2008.

He was also wanted by the Odisha police in connection with Nayagarh attack in 2008 that left 10 policemen dead, and the raid on R. Udaygiri town in 2006.

"I don't know laws. My son should be released as Odisha Police had assured me to free him after interrogation," the mother said in a letter to Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.

IG (prison) Pranabindu Acharya said "The government has no role in not allowing Kamulamma to meet her son. It is up to the superintendent of the jail."

Superintendent of the special jail P C Sahu said Azad's mother had met him earlier but "this time, we did not allow her to meet him on security ground."

Meanwhile, VHP opposed any move to free Azad. "How can the government release Azad who has been charge sheeted by Crime Branch in Saraswati murder case which led to large scale riot in Kandhamal," said state VHP president D P Kar.
