Bangalore's Jain University wins UCC

Fighting back with an exciting nail biting finish, Bangalore's Jain University won the coveted Toyota University Cricket Championship, bowling Delhi's Jamia Millia Islamia out to win by only 2 runs.

The Championship trophy was presented to the winning team by Union Human Resource Development Minister M M Pallam Raju.

Shreyas Gopal from Jain University was awarded the batsman of the match and the man of the match award. Abhay Negi was awarded the best bowler of the match.


Captain of Jain University, Kaunain Abbas was awarded the Player of the Tournament and given a Toyota Etios car.

Kevin D´Almeda from Mumbai University was awarded the Batsman of the Tournament while Abhay Negi from Jamia Millia University was given the bowler of the tournament award.

Most Promising player of the Tournament was given to Kushan Mavai from Jiwaji University. All of them were given a cheque of Rs 50,000.

The winning team was given Rs 5 lakhs and the runners up team was given Rs 3 lakhs.

An initiative launched last month by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD), the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) and media network NDTV, in association with Toyota, MRF and Coca-Cola, UCC aims to encourage cricket at the university level.

The tournament aims to nurture and promote young hopefuls and providing national exposure to extraordinary sporting talent, the organisers said.

The top eight teams from the Rohinton Baria tournament were selected to sweat it out, playing at various University grounds and International stadia.

The participating teams for the 2013 Championship that were selected from the four regional zones were Jamia Millia Islamia, Aligarh Muslim University, Awadhesh Pratap Singh University, Veer Bahadur Singh Purvanchal University, Mumbai University, Jiwaji University, University of Madras and Jain University.
