Kolkata: The Joint Council of Bus Syndicate, one of the largest public transport bus unions of West Bengal, Monday threatened to go on an indefinite strike from Oct 9 if the fares were not increased in the wake of the recent diesel price hike.

"We have decided to go on an indefinite strike from Oct 9. On Oct 8, we have a meeting with the state transport minister, if the fares are not increased we will go on an indefinite strike," said Sadhan Das, representing the syndicate.

The indefinite strike may see over 36,000 buses going off the road.

"The state government has to increase the fares with immediate effect because if it is not done most of the buses will stop plying," said Das.

From Sep 17-20, the bus operators had gone on strike demanding a fare hike.

"We were then assured of a bus fare hike. But the government has done nothing. So there is no way out other than a strike," said Das.
