Mr Gadkari's Purti Group has also denied the reports.

'BJP should retrospect Gadkari's leadership': Congress

New Delhi: Congress Party on Sunday took potshots at Nitin Gadkari over reports of the Income Tax (IT) Department issuing summons to him to appear before it, and said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) should now retrospect the leadership of its national president.

" It is a personal matter, but he (Gadkari) is the president of the BJP and in these days he always in news regarding corruption charges. So, the BJP should think over it," said Congress spokesperson Rashid Alvi.

"The entire country knows that these corruption chargers, fake directors, various notices from the IT Department. But it is their internal issue, we don't want to comment on it anymore," he added.

The BJP has, however, denied reports of Income Tax issuing summons to Gadkari, and alleged that it was a plot to malign his image.

The IT department has issued summons for appearance to Gadkari in connection with its investigation against him and some associated companies of his Purti Group for alleged tax evasion.

According to media reports, Gadkari has been asked for his personal appearance so that he can be confronted with the probe documents prepared by the department in this regard in the last few months.

The IT Department has been probing various firms that invested in Gadkari's company Purti Power and Sugar Limited (PPSL).
