India's main opposition Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Thursday slammed Congress president Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra and said the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) should not be used to 'shield corruption'.

"Haryana and Rajasthan governments helped Vadra," BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad told media.

"How can PMO be used to shield corruption?" he said.

In response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed in the Allahabad High Court, the PMO has said allegations against Vadra "appear to be false, vexatious and based on hearsay".

The PMO also said that it has been wrongly made party to the case and can´t be used to order inquiries against private citizens purely on the basis of media reports and dispute facts.

Saying that the petition was not in "good faith", the PMO reply alleges that it is "it is driven by a desire for publicity and seems to be actuated by political considerations rather than public interest".

Vadra, an industrialist, has been accused by activist-turned-politician Arvind Kejriwal of illegal land transactions with real estate giant DLF in Haryana.

The PIL, filed by an Right to Information (RTI) activist has demanded an inquiry into the allegations against Vadra.
