BJP wants stay on appointment of new CBI chief

The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday demanded withdrawal of the government decision to appoint Ranjit Sinha as new Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) director.

The BJP has alleged the Congress-led UPA government of taking decision in hurry and violating the procedure as the select committee on Lokpal had suggested that such appointments should be done through a collegium method.

Leaders of Opposition in Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley respectively have written to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and demanded stay on the appointment.

Meanwhile, the Congress Party has said that there is no official announcement has been made regarding the appointment of Sinha the government is following the procedure required.]

Blaming the opposition of playing politics on the issue Congress spokesperson Sandeep Dikshit said: "We are following each and every procedures, but the BJP is playing politics on the issue."

Asked about the select committee recommendations about such appointments, Dikshit said: "The Lokpal Bill is yet to be passed in Rajya Sabha and we don't know when it will come into force, but the CBI director at present is retiring, so we will have to appoint a new person for that office."

According to media reports Ranjit Sinha, a 1974 batch IPS officer of the Bihar cadre and current director general of Indo-Tibetan Border Force, has been named by the government as the next director of the CBI.

Sinha is likely to take charge from Amar Pratap Singh, who retires on November 30. (ANI)
