At least nine people were killed in Kabul on Saturday in a suicide bomb attack outside the Afghan Defence Ministry that came during the visit of US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel to the city.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in the Afghan capital, and said it was meant as a message to the U.S. defence chief.
Hagel was in a briefing at a U.S.-led military coalition facility in another part of the city when the explosion occurred, a American official said.
The bomber, who was on a bicycle, struck just before 9 am local time, a senior police officer said.
In another strike about half an hour later, another suicide bomber attacked a police checkpoint in the Khost province of eastern Afghanistan, killing a policeman and eight civilians, who were mostly children
