Jammu and Kashmir Police on Saturday informed that a British woman had been found murdered inside a houseboat on the Dal Lake here.
The police suspect that the victim might have been raped before being killed.
Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Afadul Mujtaba said a Dutch tourist, De-wit Richard, who was sharing the houseboat on the scenic Dal Lake with the British woman and was living in a room adjacent to the victim's room, has been arrested while trying to flee the Valley from Qazigund.
"The English lady had been living for quite sometime here, I think for about a month and the Dutch tourist had arrived here two days back. But what we have found on the spot is that there are injuries caused to the lady and the cabin, which had been locked from inside has been broken," said Mujtaba.
"And the Dutch tourist had escaped from this place leaving behind all his belongings. While he was trying to cross, the boat in which he was traveling capsized and he got drowned and he reached Tourist Reception Centre from where he took a taxi and was trying to flee. He was apprehended from Qazigund by the police," he added.
According to reports, a case of murder has been registered and a team of forensic experts is probing the spot of the incident.
This incident takes place just a few days after a Swiss tourist was allegedly gang-raped in Madhya Pradesh Datia District. The 39-year-old Swiss woman was gang-raped on March 15 when she was camping along with her male companion in a tent in Datia district.
An incident had also come to the light last month when an attempt was made to molest a British tourist in Uttar Pradesh's Agra city.
Union Tourism Minister K. Chiranjeevi had earlier last month said that the safety and security of tourists is the topmost priority of his ministry. (ANI)
