The BSE Sensex rose 0.05 percent on Tuesday in a day of choppy trade as gains by some key stocks offset profit booking in lenders.
The 30-share benchmark index ended 9.53 points higher at 19,179.36 with 20 of its components closing in the green.
The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 0.04 percent or 2.50 points higher at 5,836.90 on Tuesday.
Market heavyweight Reliance Industries surged and IT stocks also rallied, countering falls in lenders such as SBI.
Meanwhile in the New Delhi bullion market, gold added Rs 200 to Rs 27,600 per 10 grams while silver dropped by Rs 800 to Rs 45,000 per kg.
