The 30-share benchmark index ended 13.34 points lower at 18,670.34 with 19 of its components closing in the red.
The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 0.04 percent or 2.55 points lower at 5,683.70 on Monday.
A fall in exports and high consumer inflation compounded concerns leading to falls in capital goods stocks.
Meanwhile in the New Delhi bullion market, gold rose by Rs 360 to Rs 32,485 per 10 grams while silver climbed by Rs 600 to Rs 62,100 per kg.
