The BSE Sensex fell 0.55 percent on Thursday, as profit taking in prominent stocks compounded volatile trade.
The 30-share benchmark index ended 110.02 points lower at 19,894.98 with 19 of its components closing in the red.
The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 0.35 percent or 21.00 points lower at 6,034.75 on Thursday.
The expiry of January derivatives kept trading volatile at the end of the session while shares such as ICICI Bank and Bharti Airtel posted declines.
Meanwhile in the New Delhi bullion market, gold recovered by Rs 65 to Rs 31,045 per 10 grams while silver also strengthened by Rs 480 to Rs 58,980 per kg.
