The BSE Sensex fell 0.79 percent on Thursday as uncertainty in the U.S. hit India's flagship software services export industry.

The 30-share benchmark index ended 147.50 points lower at 18,471.37 with 22 of its components closings in the red.

The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 0.63 percent or 35.95 points lower at 5,631.00 on Thursday.

Heavyweight IT stocks such as Tata Consultancy Services and Infosys led the declines on worries avoid a U.S. "fiscal cliff".
