The BSE Sensex rose 0.12 percent on Tuesday as bargain buying helped lift some prominent shares.
The 30-share benchmark index ended 23.11 points higher at 18,704.53 with 16 of its components closing in the green.
The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 0.14 percent or 7.75 points higher at 5,641.60 on Tuesday.
Investors tracked steadier global stocks to buy in some defensive blue chips even though sentiment remained weak.
Meanwhile in the bullion market, gold moved up by Rs 25 to Rs 29,540 per 10 grams while silver climbed by Rs 165 to Rs 54,775 per kg.
