The BSE Sensex rose 0.40 percent on Wednesday, recovering from a plunge a day ago but posting the biggest monthly fall since May.
The 30-share benchmark index ended 74.53 points higher at 18,505.38 with 20 of its components closing in the green.
The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 0.39 percent or 21.80 points higher at 5,619.70 on Wednesday.
Blue chip stocks rebounded from a slump on Wednesday, lifting the Sensex but the index ended 1.37 percent lower for the month.
Meanwhile in the bullion market, gold edged down by Rs 5 per 10 gm to close at Rs 30,950 while silver dropped by Rs 110 per kg to end at Rs 60,665.
