The BSE Sensex fell 0.29 percent on Monday as prominent stocks continued their decline on political uncertainty.
The 30-share benchmark index ended 54.18 points lower at 18,681.42.
The broader 50-share National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty index ended 0.31 percent or 17.50 points lower at 5,633.85 on Monday.
Political uncertainty was exacerbated by a continuing hawkish stance by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) that raised concerns about economic growth.
Meanwhile in the New Delhi bullion market, gold fell by Rs 130 to Rs 30,125 per 10 grams while silver fell by Rs 15 to Rs 54,400 per kg.
