Azamgarh, July 20 (IBNS) A Uttar Pradesh police officer was arrested in connection with the murder of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) leader Sarvesh Singh Seepu in Azamgarh district on Friday, reports said on Saturday.
Acting on a complaint lodged by the murdered BSP leader´s family, Vijay Singh, who was the Station House Officer of Jiyanpur Police Station, was arrested late on Friday.
Seepu´s family accused Singh of conspiring with the attackers to murder the BSP leader, reports said.
Seepu and his bodyguard were shot dead by unidentified assailants outside his residence in Azamgarh on Friday.
The BSP leader died on the spot as the attackers fled on motorcycles.
Protesting the incident, his supporters torched several vehicles and even pelted stones on a nearby police station.
Demanding immediate arrest of the accused, the protesters reportedly clashed with the police.
At least two people were killed and several others were injured as the police opened fire on protesters.
