Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has criticised the ruling Samajwadi Party (SP) over its decision to field Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav's wife, Dimple, for the Kannauj Lok Sabha by-election slated for June 24.
Condemning Dimple's candidature, BSP leader Swami Prasad Maurya accused the SP of practicing and propagating dynastic politics.
"This is not a new thing for the Samajwadi Party. The character and essence of the Samajwadi Party has always been dynastic politics. Though they claim to support socialism, they have always practiced dynastic politics," he said.
"So, it was natural that the SP leadership's decision would revolve around the interests of their family members. This is the reason why they fielded Dimple Yadav in the elections," he added.
However, defending the decision, SP leader Shivpal Yadav urged people of Kannauj to ensure Dimple Yadav's victory in the elections by a huge margin of votes.
"We welcome the decision taken by the party leadership. Kannauj has been an old seat, and three chief ministers of the state have been selected from that constituency in the past. Now, Dimple Yadav, our daughter in law, will be contesting the elections from there, and we are sure the people will ensure she wins from that constituency," said Shivpal Yadav.
The parliamentary constituency fell vacant after Akhilesh Yadav resigned from the Lok Sabha after he was sworn in as a member of the UP Legislative Council after becoming the Chief Minister.
The decision to field Dimple Yadav as the party's candidate for the by-polls was taken the by Samajwadi Party Parliamentary Board, which met in Lucknow on Friday. (ANI)
