The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the Petroleum Ministry's proposal to increase the number of subsidised LPG cylinders available to households to nine a year from the current cap of six from April 2013.

"The annual cap on subsidised LPG cylinders would be hiked from the current six to nine. CCPS agreed to raise the cap from six cylinders to nine cylinders.," Petroleum Minister M Veerappa Moily told media here.

The cap would be raised from the next fiscal year beginning April 2013, the minister added.

Moily further said: "For now, there's no revision in the prices of diesel. But the oil marketing companies (OMCs) have authorised to make price corrections from time to time."

According to Television reports, the government had yesterday sought permission from the Election Commission to increase the cap on LPG cylinders as three states - Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland - will go to polls soon and the model code of conduct is in force.

Giving its approval, the Election Commission said the decision was not a violation of code as it was an ongoing scheme, report said. (ANI)
