A day after the West Bengal State Election Commission (EC) moved the Calcutta High Court seeking rejection of dates announced by the Mamata Banerjee-led government for the upcoming panchayat polls in the state, the hearing of the case started on Tuesday.
During the 30 minutes hearing, the Commission´s counsel Samaraditta Pal brought several allegations against the state government.
The State Election Commission on Monday filed the petition before Justice Biswanath Samaddar.
The court did not accept the petition as the matter was not listed to come up for hearing.
Issuing a notification, the government last month had announced that polls will be held in the state in two phases on Apr 26 and Apr 30. The government said the polls will be conducted under the supervision of the state police.
The Commission, however, proposed a three-phase voting and deployment of central paramilitary forces in order to ensure free and fair elections in the state.
