A Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court on Saturday extended the judicial custody of Kartnataka mining baron G Janardhana Reddy and his personal assistant Mehfuz Ali Khan till April 17 in connection to an illegal mining scam.
The order was passed on Saturday by CBI special court judge B M Angadi.
Reddy and his wife Aruna Lakshmi´s Deccan Mining Syndicate (DMC) and Associated Mining Corporation (AMC) are facing probe in connection to illegal mining charges.
Reddy and Khan are currently lodged in Bangalore central prison.
They were produced in court via video- conferencing on Saturday.
Reddy was arrested by the CBI on Sept 5 following allegations of involvement in running an illegal mining empire with his brother Karunakara Reddy in Bellary region.
Reddy was arrested after the federal investigating agency raided his house in Bellary.
His brother-in-law Srinivas Reddy, who is the managing director of Obulapuram Mining Corporation (OMC) owned by the Reddy brothers, was also arrested from Bangalore.
The CBI recovered Rs 3 crore in cash and 30 kilos of gold from the house of Janardhana Reddy.
The Reddy brothers are members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
The Reddy brothers were powerful ministers in the BS Yeddyurappa government till the latter resigned over his alleged roles in various scams.
A Centrally Empowered Committee (CEC), in its report to the Supreme Court, had said that G Jnanardhana Reddy and Karunakara Reddy have been mining in areas demarcated as forest land in 2004 'with the connivance of Andhra Pradesh government officials.'
They were indicted by the former Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hedge too, triggering a huge row.
