Technology behemoth Apple on Tuesday introduced a smaller version of its popular tablet computer iPad and also introduced an updated edition of the original device, in an effort to take on rivals such as Samsung and Amazon.
The 7.9 inch device, will compete with similar sized Samsung Galaxy Tab and Amazon's Kindle tablets, and along with the new 9.7 inch iPad, comes just two days before Microsoft is due to launch its own Surface tablet.
Claiming a design that is 23 percent thinner and 53 percent lighter than the third generation iPad at 7.2 mm thin and 0.68 pounds heavy, the new iPad mini features 10 hours of battery life, front and back cameras and a thinner frame.
"It´s not just a shrunken down iPad, it´s an entirely new design," marketing chief Phil Schiller said, adding that the company will start taking orders for the new model on Friday Oct. 26 and will ship the Wi-Fi-only models on Nov. 2.
At $329 for the WiFi-only edition however, the price of the iPad mini is bound to disappoint many who had expected the device to be tagged at between $250 to $300 -- in line with most devices in the category.
