The outgoing head of China's legislature has praised the body for upholding the ruling Communist Party's leading role and for rejecting Western models of multiparty democracy.

Wu Bangguo's statements came Friday in his final address to the body officially known as the National People's Congress, during its annual session in Beijing. He said the party's leadership over the congress' legislative work was a fundamental requirement in keeping with China's rejection of the Western political concept of separation of powers.

And he said the body upheld the uniqueness of China's system and "resolutely resisted the influence of all kinds of erroneous thought and theories."

Wu in previous years has been even more strident in criticizing Western-style democracy. Wu and other top leaders are stepping down after the current session.
