Beijing, Sep 28 (IANS) China Tuesday observed the 2,561st birth anniversary of Confucius, the famous philosopher.
Confucius (551-479 B.C.) founded a school of thought called Confucianism that deeply influenced later generations. He was also the first Chinese to set up private schools and enroll students from all walks of life.
Many of his followers from across China joined in commemorations at a Confucius temple in Beijing.
A ceremony was also held in Confucius' hometown, Qufu, in Shandong province, which was attended by experts from China and aboard.
'Confucianism is very traditional. But there are many positive elements. It's very informative. I hope it can continue in this direction,' Larry W. Hurtado, professor at the University of Edinburgh, was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
