Christa Wolf, one of the best-known writers from the former East Germany whose works described war and politics from a woman's perspective, has died. She was 82.

Wolf's publisher Suhrkamp Verlag said the writer died Thursday in Berlin. It gave no cause of death or further information.

Wolf was born in what is now Poland in 1929. Her family was expelled and settled in then eastern Germany.

In her works, including "Cassandra" and "Medea," Wolf explored themes of war and power shifts through a woman's experience.

Wolf came under fire after Germany's reunification in 1990 for not having been critical enough of East Germany's Communist regime.
