Michael Lumb (22) and Watson gave Sydney a good start as the openers scored 60 runs in the first wicket partnership.
Brad Haddin (32) and Steve Smith (25*) made some important contributions with the willows.
Both added 42 runs in the fourth wicket partnership after Watson departed.
Aaron Phangiso remained the pick of the Lions bowlers as he scalped three wickets by giving away 14 runs in 4 overs.
