An army spokesman confirmed that violent clashes have resumed in eastern Congo, as the army battled a group of ex-soldiers who defected and formed a new rebel group.

Oliver Hamuli told The Associated Press by phone Friday that the army has been fighting the defecting soldiers since Thursday night. He says they attacked one of the army's positions in the Runyoni zone near the border with Rwanda.

The new rebellion started last month, after soldiers from the Tutsi ethnic group linked to Gen. Bosco Ntaganda began defecting from the army. Ntaganda and his fighters used to belong to the CNDP rebel group, and agreed to integrate into the army in 2009.

They began leaving the army in droves in early April, claiming the government had failed to hold up its end of the deal.
