Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Moises Henriques picked up two wickets each in the match for Sydney.
Earlier, Sydney won the toss and elected to bat first.
Mumbai Indians bowlers bowled well to restrict Sydney to 136 runs for the loss of seven wickets.
Steven Smith remained the top-scorer for the side with his 41 runs. He hit three boundaries in the innings.
